Dr. Shana Nicholas

Dr. Shana Nicholas is the co-founder and owner of Nicholas & Noble Psychological Associates, and a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice since 2005. She approaches therapy from a collaborative and compassionate perspective, always honoring the courage it takes to acknowledge and share your pain and struggles.  Dr. Nicholas joins together with her clients to solve problems, confront conflicts, and make affirming choices that lead to a healthier lifestyle.  She helps clients see their inner strengths and abilities, and use them to navigate painful issues. Additionally, she assists clients in identifying maladaptive patterns that keep them stuck, and empowers them to learn new perspectives and strategies that move them forward toward a more balanced life.  Dr. Nicholas utilizes scientific treatment approaches including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Gottman Method Couples Counseling assuring that your treatment will be effective and efficient.  When appropriate, she integrates relational and insight-oriented approaches to promote awareness into how your history may influence recurrent patterns which keep you from living a meaningful life. 

Dr. Nicholas’ style is compassionate and empowering, yet always sincere. She provides support and space in therapy when clients need to explore their thoughts and feelings about difficult situations. When appropriate, she challenges clients to encourage their growth and development. She would welcome the opportunity to talk with you about your needs and goals. 

Education

Dr. Nicholas obtained her Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with honors. She holds a Master’s and a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology/Chicago (1999).  Dr. Nicholas completed her pre-doctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), where she received specialized training in treating eating disorders and working with student-athletes.  After completing her postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern CAPS, she was hired as a staff psychologist for two years before transitioning full-time to private practice. 

Experience

While completing her graduate studies, Dr. Nicholas obtained assessment training at the Federal Bureau of Prisons: Metropolitan Correctional Center.  She received advanced therapy training at Cook County Hospital’s Fantus Outpatient Clinic and University of Illinois at Chicago Counseling Center.  She also worked as a mental health counselor at Chicago Lakeshore Hospital. She is a licensed psychologist in Illinois and a participating member of American Psychological Association (APA). She is also a professional member of Resolve, the national infertility association, and has received the Certificate of Completion for Perinatal Mood Disorders from Postpartum Support International. Dr. Nicholas has completed level 3 certification for Gottman Method Couples Counseling.
